For a glimpse into the minds of the future's great designers, Design Indaba this year invited the top graduates from design institutions across the world to not only come and experience Design Indaba, but also share their work in Pecha Kucha format. Speaking at the conference were Jon Stam from Design Academy Eindhoven, Sandhya Lalloo from the University of Johannesburg, Revital Cohen from the Royal College of Art in London, Arno Mathies from ECAL Lausanne in Switzerland, Barbara Cilliers from the University of Pretoria and Lauren Mackler from Rhode Island School of Design in the US. This presentation by Revital Cohen, in which she talks about her Life Support Project, was also presented at the Design Indaba Expo. About Revital Cohen: Cohen recently attained a Masters in Design Interactions from the Royal College of Art in London, which followed a BA in Contemporary Furniture Design from Buckinghamshire New University. As a designer and researcher she develops critical objects and provocative scenarios exploring the juxtaposition of the natural with the artificial. Her work spans across various media and includes collaborations with scientists, animal breeders and medical consultants. Red Tide - Death Comes to Gasparilla Island Florida
A recent red tide algae bloom has killed a lot of the reef fish and other fish close to the beaches of Gasparilla Island In Southwest Florida. "Red tide" is caused by microscopic algae (plant-like microorganism) called Karenia brevis. The red tide organism: Karenia brevis or K. brevis produces a toxin that can affect the central nervous system of fish, birds, mammals and other animals including humans. Blooms of K.Brevis in our area, often intensify where fresh water run off from land meets salt water. The blooms that did the damage seen in this video, intensified at the Gulf inlets from Sarasota county down through Lee county and they then moved south along the coast. The blooms are moved by tides, ocean currents and wind generated currents. If the algae blooms continue to find food , they will continue to survive and even grow to cover larger areas. These blooms can last for days or months depending on the conditions. In full contact with nature we have created Pou of Beca-Espai Cultural Obert (Beca's Well- Open Cultural Space). In Pou de Beca we work with fresh seasonal products of local and ecological origin. Good for our palate, clean because they are produced without pollutants or transgenic techniques and fair because workers receive a fair pay for them.
